Philanthropist made nkosuohemaa

An American educationist, Madam Dalia May, has adopted 10 female junior high school (JHS) graduates at Akyem Kusi, near Kade, to support them to become financially independent.

As a first step, Madam May, who is a principal teacher at John F. Kennedy Elementary School in Windsor, Connecticut, has provided them with sewing machines and sponsored them as apprentice seamstresses.

She has pledged to resource them to establish their own enterprises on completion of their education in order to lead decent lives.

This came to light when Madam May was installed as the Nkosuohemaa (Development queenmother) of Kusi in the Eastern Region. She goes under the stool name Nana Yaa Gyasiwaa Tenadu I.

Expansion of scheme

At her installation, Madam May disclosed that she would expand the scholarship scheme to benefit many more  females in the area.

She observed that through the gesture, the unemployment challenges facing young women in the Denkyembour District would reduce.

Touching on teenage pregnancy, Madam May stressed that she would team up with the Kusi Traditional Authority to stem the trend.

She was full of praise for Nana Okoda Darko I, the Gyaasehene of Kusi, through whom she established contacts with the Kusi Traditional Council.

Madam May, who holds four first degrees in addition to a master’s degree, advised schoolchildren and students at Kusi to attach special importance to their education in order to become responsible future leaders to help develop the town.

Commendation

The Kusihene, Nana Ntiamoah Kusi Boadum, commended her for her commitment to the development of the town, stressing that her installation was in response to that gesture.

He advised the new Nkosuohene to be tolerant and study the Ghanaian culture in order to work with the local people to bring more investors to the area to absorb the numerous unemployed youth.

The other traditional rulers who spoke at the function included Osabarima Owusu Nketiah III, the Akyem Takrowasehene, Osabarima Adu Gyamfi III, the Chief of Okumening, and Nana Ofusuaa Oware, the Kusi queenmother.
