Currently, more than 120 tonnes of plastic waste is collected on a daily basis and resold to recycling companies.
Initiative
The presentation of the 15 tricycles is part of an initiative of the Plastic Waste Management Programme and LUOJIA Motors to present 100 tricycles to plastic waste collectors from this year to 2015.
It is to help reduce the cost of doing business by plastic waste collectors, while increasing their profit.
Stakeholders
The stakeholders of the Plastic Waste Management Programme include the National Association of Sachet and Packaged Water Producers, the Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association, and the Plastic Packaged Products Distributors Association.
The rest are the Ghana Journalists Association, Coca Cola and Fan Milk Ghana Limited.
Chairman
Presenting the items at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in Accra yesterday, the Chairman of the Plastic Waste Management Programme, Mr Ebbo Botwe, said there was the need to adopt measures to manage waste.
He commended the AMA and other organisations for their support and appealed that the bye-laws on littering should be enforced to ensure a clean environment.
AMA
The Chief Executive of the AMA, Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, encouraged other private sector operators to initiate such programmes to complement the efforts of the assembly.
He commended the stakeholders and encouraged plastic waste collectors to pursue their businesses with passion, since recycling was a major waste management trend globally.
