Police arrest alleged drug kingpin in Berekum
The Ghana Police Service has arrested a 39-year-old man in Berekum in the Bono Region for allegedly possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.
In a statement issued by the Bono Regional Police Command on February 19, the Berekum Divisional Police Command identified the suspect as David Frimpong, who was apprehended at Nyamebekyere, a suburb of Berekum Municipality.
Police said the arrest followed an intelligence-led operation at the suspect’s residence, described as a semi-completed building. The suspect reportedly attempted to flee upon seeing officers but was apprehended.
A search of the premises uncovered 57 compressed slabs of dried leaves, 195 wraps of dried leaves and three sacks containing quantities of dried leaves, all suspected to be Indian hemp.
Officers also found a container of ‘groundnut cake’ toffee suspected to have been mixed with the substance, six pairs of scissors, 14 packets of cigarettes and 190 wrapping papers.
The police said the seized items have been retained for evidential and forensic examination.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspect is a dealer in narcotic drugs and has allegedly been distributing the substances within Berekum and its surrounding communities.
He remains in police custody assisting with investigations and is expected to be arraigned to face the full rigours of the law.
