Police assure Teshie residents of security

The Accra Region Police Command has assured residents of Teshie that it will smoke out  the armed robbers  who have been terrorising people in the area in recent times.

Gun-wielding robbers have for the past three months been attacking residents of some suburbs of Teshie, including Tseaddo, Abgelizaa, Rasta, Tebibianor and Okpio Gornor.

Some of the residents claim they currently live in fear due to the constant attacks by the robbers who torment them on a daily basis in the night.

To familiarise himself with the situation, the Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohuno, visited the affected areas last Friday.   

After assessing the situation through interaction with some of the victims , Mr Yohuno stated that the availability of police posts in the area could help in the combat of crime.

According to him, even though the population of the five suburbs was  more than 30,000, there was  no police post to serve the people.

He therefore urged the municipal assembly and the traditional authorities  to make land available to the residents association to  construct police posts in the area.

He said the police would increase police patrol in the affected areas.

‘We can’t sleep’ 

The Chairman of the Landlords Association of Rasta, Mr Nestor Kwame Akrasi, said there had been over 20 robberies in the area recently.

He said in some cases the robbers took the wedding bands of their victims, apart from the money and electronic gadgets such as phones, laptops and ipads.

There were also cases that “the armed robbers have returned to their victim’s houses to rob again. We are not able to sleep soundly now. They fire guns.”

He said 10 watchdog committees had so far been formed with the support of the residents and each household paid GH¢20 for the upkeep of the people who had volunteered to serve on the committee.

One of the victims of the robbery attacks, Ms Alice Baidoo, said the robbers were armed with heavy implements which they used to break into her house.

She said she and her household had been gripped with fear but had no other option than to endure the attacks.

Haphazard  buildings 

The Municipal Chief Executive of Ledzokuku Krowor Municipal Assembly (LEKMA), Mr Seth Bado Tawiah, said the municipality would complement the efforts of the police as best as it could.

He expressed concern over how buildings were springing up in the municipality haphazardly even in waterways and by open drains.

“However, when the municipality attempts to demolish those buildings we are faced with agitations and criticisms,” he said.
