Police identify fifth suspect in killing of Liberian national at Sakumono
The Ghana Police Service has identified a fifth suspect in connection with the killing of Austin Tengbeh, a 26-year-old Liberian information technology specialist who was attacked at Sakumono, Lashibi, in Accra.
The Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Commissioner of Police Lydia Yaako Donkor, disclosed this on Monday, 9 March 2026, during a press briefing at the CID Headquarters in Accra.
The case drew widespread public attention after video footage of the attack circulated on social media. Police subsequently transferred the matter from the Sakumono District Police to the CID Homicide Unit for further investigation.
Three suspects — Vincent Adzikah, Francis Amuzu and William Addison — were arrested at the scene on 27 February 2026 by officers from the Sakumono District Police.
A fourth suspect, Enoch Mensah, initially went into hiding following the incident but later resurfaced. He was arrested and remanded into custody on 4 March 2026.
The fifth suspect, Nana Agyening Boateng, who had not been named in earlier police statements or media reports, has also been arrested and remanded into custody. COP Donkor said Boateng is believed to have taken actions which set in motion the events that led to Tengbeh’s death.
All five suspects are currently in police custody and are expected to reappear before the Baatsonaa District Court on 16 March 2026.
A post-mortem examination was conducted on 5 March 2026 after the body was formally identified by the deceased’s brother-in-law. The pathologist is expected to issue the final autopsy report after receiving the toxicology results.
Police said the case was referred to the CID Homicide Unit on 2 March 2026, together with machete exhibits and three of the remand suspects, for further investigation.
COP Donkor said the Ghana Police Service strongly condemns acts of mob justice.
“This is a criminal offence under Ghanaian law,” she said, adding that the police wish to remind the public that taking the law into one’s own hands will not be tolerated.
Meanwhile, protesters gathered at the Ghanaian Embassy in Monrovia on 6 March 2026, during Ghana’s Independence Day celebrations, to demand justice for Tengbeh.
The Ambassador of the Republic of Liberia to Ghana, H.E. Musu Jatu Ruhle, extended condolences to the family and said the embassy is engaging the Government of Ghana and the relevant security agencies on the matter.
COP Donkor urged the public to report suspected criminal activity to the police rather than resort to self-help or inciting mob action. She asked anyone with information about the case to report to the nearest police station or call the police emergency line 191.
