Police refute claims dismissal of interdicted officer who allegedly assaulted journalist

The Ghana Police Service has refuted claims circulating in sections of the media that one of its officers involved in an incident during the Ablekuma North by-election has been dismissed.

On July 11, 2025, the Service interdicted a police officer who was captured on video allegedly slapping a journalist covering the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun. However, the Service clarified that no decision on dismissal had been made.

In a statement, the Police said it had noted with concern reports suggesting that the officer had been sacked, describing them as false and misleading.

The Service explained that its internal disciplinary procedures are a quasi-judicial process, and the outcome cannot be pre-determined.

It further noted that the Police Service Regulations provide for multiple sanctions in cases of misconduct, and any decision on applicable penalties is determined on a case-by-case basis following the disciplinary trial.

The Police urged the public and media outlets to avoid spreading unverified claims that may undermine due process.
