Police return GH¢85,000 found on Techiman Kumasi highway to owner
Four police officers on snap checkpoint duty on the Techiman Kumasi Highway have returned GH¢85,000 to a businessman after a bag containing the cash fell from a moving vehicle onto the roadside in the early hours of February 14, 2026.
The Bono East Regional Police Command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, commending the officers for their conduct.
According to the statement, at approximately 4:20 a.m., officers stationed at the checkpoint spotted a bag lying by the roadside, which appeared to have fallen from a passing vehicle. Inspector George Appiah, who led the team, moved with three colleagues to retrieve it.
On inspection, the officers found the bag contained cash. The exterior bore the name “Ofori” and a phone number. The officers did not count the money and handed the bag and its contents to the Regional Command for follow-up, the statement said.
Using the contact details, the police called the number. A 53 year old businessman, Mr Stephen Ofori of Ashtown in Kumasi, responded and later reported to the checkpoint to claim ownership.
Mr Ofori told police he had withdrawn the GH¢85,000 from GCB Bank in Wa and was transporting it to Kumasi in a commercial vehicle when the bag fell off.
Police counted and verified the cash in his presence and confirmed the full amount remained intact. After he provided an explanation and completed verification procedures, the Command released the money to him, according to the statement.
“We wish to highly commend our officers and the community members who brought this to the attention of the police,” the statement said.
The statement was signed by Assistant Superintendent of Police Appiah Danquah, Bono East Regional Police Service Public Relations Officer.
