Weather today: GMET warns of reduced visibility and widespread rainfall

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMET) has forecast thunderstorms and rain over parts of northern Ghana on Friday morning, while mist and fog are expected to reduce visibility across sections of southern Ghana during the early hours.

According to the agency's latest 18-hour weather forecast, thunderstorms will persist over portions of the northern sector at the start of the day, with light rain also expected in parts of the south. Motorists travelling through coastal, forest and mountainous areas have been advised to exercise caution as mist and fog patches could significantly reduce visibility.

GMET said weather conditions are expected to improve gradually through the day, with brief spells of sunshine anticipated across much of the country. However, the agency warned that the respite is likely to be temporary as thunderstorms and rain of varying intensity are forecast to develop later over parts of the coastal, middle, transition and northern belts.

In the Greater Accra Region, including Accra, Kasoa and surrounding communities, slight morning rain is expected before conditions become mostly cloudy. Similar conditions are forecast for parts of the Central and Western regions, where Takoradi, Cape Coast and Axim could also experience light rain before cloud cover dominates later in the day.

Across the Ashanti, Bono, Ahafo and Eastern regions, mist is expected during the morning, followed by intervals of sunshine and an increased chance of afternoon and evening thunderstorms in several communities, including Kumasi, Koforidua, Ho and Kete Krachi.

Northern Ghana is expected to experience the most active weather, with thunderstorms forecast for communities including Yendi, Tamale, Bolgatanga, Nalerigu and Wa. Although sunshine is expected to emerge in parts of the afternoon, further thunderstorms are likely to develop in some areas by evening.

Temperatures are expected to range between 24°C and 30°C along the coast, 22°C to 31°C across the forest belt, 22°C to 32°C in the transition zone and 25°C to 35°C in the northern sector.

GMET also maintained its advisory that sea conditions will remain rough, urging fishermen, operators of small boats and other sea users to exercise caution before venturing offshore.

The agency has advised the public to stay updated with official weather forecasts as conditions may change during the course of the day.
