Police unveil strategy to deal with robberies at Top Town

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Mohammed Alhassan, yesterday visited Top Town and American Farm at Ngleshie Amanfro, where he assured the people that the police would not relent in their efforts to deal with armed robbery attacks in the area.

He said the police would strengthen their presence with more men and surveillance in the area for the residents there to live and go about their activities without fear.

Community police

“We are sending the Community Policing Unit to also come and work with the various communities. As you can see, it is a developing area with houses interspersed with bushes, which must be cleared,” he said.

He called on the people to support the police by providing information that would lead to the arrest of the criminals operating in the area.

Among the IGP’s entourage were the Accra Regional Police Commander, DCOP Christian Tetteh Yehuno, and the Deputy Regional Commander, ACP Timothy Bonga.

Robberies

Top Town and American Farm have, over the past couple of months, witnessed a number of armed robbery attacks, during which the robbers inflicted machete wounds on some of their victims and made away with items such phones and laptops.

To deal with the problem, the Accra Regional Police Command last Tuesday mounted a tent to maintain a 24-hour police presence at American Farm, where many of the robbery attacks had taken place.

Commendation

During the visit, the IGP interacted with personnel at the Police Tent City at American Farm, as well as landlords and residents of the area.

He also visited a couple who have given out their tailoring shop to be converted into a police station in the area.

He commended the couple and called on Ghanaians to emulate their example, since security was a shared responsibility.

“We have done a lot of work here in terms of intelligence gathering. At the appropriate time we will share the information with members of the community,” he said, and called on policemen in the area to educate residents on personal and home security.

Two arrests

DCOP Yehuno said two persons had been arrested following the recent robberies in the area.

One of them, who had dreadlocks, went to shave off the dreadlocks to outwit the police when he was identified by residents, he said.

Residents, he advised, must look out for strange faces in the area and report to the police for their arrest and possible prosecution.

Landlords

The chairmen of the various landlords associations commended the IGP for his concern and visit to the area and pledged to support and cooperate with the police to deal with armed robbery and other crimes in and around Amanfro.
