Porter steals from student

The Agona Swedru District Magistrate Court, presided over by Mr Kwaku Baah Frempong, has convicted a porter, Michael Kojo Asamoah, on his own plea of stealing a schoolbag containing a student’s result slips and GH¢1,200 at Agona Swedru.

Mr Frempong, however, deferred Asamoah’s sentence and remanded him in police custody for admitting the theft and offering to refund the stolen cash belonging to Elijah Nkorang.

Asamoah is to reappear in court on a later date.

The prosecutor, Sergeant Emmanuel Agbafe, said the complainant, Nkorang, was a student based at Mensakrom, while Asamoah was a porter and resided at Dwenko, both suburbs of Agona Swedru.

According to the prosecutor, Nkorang gained admission to a vocational school at Agona Nyakrom so he went to Accra and collected GH¢1,200 from his father for the payment of his school fees, as well as for the purchase of provisions and other items.

The prosecutor said Nkorang kept the money in his schoolbag, together with his previous school’s result slips.

At about 11:30 p.m. on January 28, 2014, Nkorang returned from Accra with the bag strapped to his back while waiting to catch a vehicle to his destination, Mensakrom.

According to Seargent Agbafe, Asamoah approached Nkorang and handed over his purse to be held for him to urinate, only for Asamoah to return later to raise a false alarm that Nkorang had changed his purse, thereby attracting six of his gang members who came and snatched his bag and bolted.

The prosecutor said a report got to the police and that at about 10 a.m. on January 29, 2014, Nkorang and his brothers travelled to Swedru where they spotted Asamoah at Chapel Square and caused his arrest.

When Asamoah was searched, they found the purse he gave to Nkorang to hold for him.

Sergeant Agbafe said upon inspection, the purse contained an American dollar, five Naira and a white paper cut in the size of money in a white envelope with the inscription “Mr Bernard Ent, Agona Swedru, Central Region”.

Efforts are underway to get the other suspects, who are now at large.
