President Mahama inaugurates Dodo Pepesu-Nkwanta road: To mark start of Volta Region tour
President John Dramani Mahama began his “Accounting to the People” tour of the Volta Region on Tuesday, with the inauguration of the 46.4 km Dodo Pepesu-Nkwanta road. The newly completed road, which is a two-lane single carriageway with double bituminous seal, is the first segment of the Eastern corridor road to be completed.

The work, which started in September 2012, was completed with funds from the European Development Fund.
Project on course
At a well-attended ceremony at Dodo Pepesu in the Jasikan District, the President said the Eastern corridor road project was on course and that those who doubted it should go to the ground to see things for themselves.
Work is ongoing on other segments including Otidamanko-Nakpanduri, Nkwanta - Otidamanko, Have-Hohoe, and Hohoe to Jasikan, and Nakpanduri–Bawku–Kulungugu.
Objectives
The Eastern corridor road project, which is a 695 km stretch from the Greater Accra Region through the Volta Region to Kulungugu in the Upper East Region, is the single longest road project in the country.
The objectives of the project include enhancing economic activities, improving the standard of living of the local people and thereby contribute to government's effort to bring development and reducing poverty in the Volta, Northern and Upper East regions.
It also seeks to foster and facilitate socio-economic development and integration within the West Africa sub-region.
Government committed to project
President Mahama said the government took the entire project very seriously because of its benefits to the nation.

"Some people say nothing is going on here," he said, and challenged the critics to go and see things for themselves.
He said once the road traversed an agrarian area, it would enable farmers to transport their produce to the marketing centres without difficulty.
President Mahama thanked the European Union (EU) for its financial support to the execution of the project.
In a speech read on his behalf, the EU Ambassador to Ghana, Mr William Hana, said the EU was happy to be associated with the project, which was meant to reduce poverty.
Commendation
The Paramount Chief of the Dodo Traditional Area, Daasebre Obonie Sebewie V, commended the government for the massive projects it had undertaken in the area, especially in the road, electricity, education and water sectors.
He expressed the hope that ongoing projects would be completed, while new ones would be initiated.
Later, the President inspected work on the Dapa-Pampawie-Ahamansu Junction cocoa road.
The three-day “Accounting to the People” tour of the Volta Region will see the President inaugurate completed projects, cut the sod for work to begin on new ones and also address the chiefs and people at various durbars.
