At the start of his “Accounting to the people” tour of the Upper East Region, President John Dramani Mahama yesterday cut the sod for the reconstruction of the Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakoum road at Zebilla in the Bawku West District, where he had arrived to a massive welcome by the people.

The 11-km road forms part of the Eastern Corridor road.

The President said funds for the project were available.

Three bridges will be constructed along the road on the Red Volta, the White Volta and the Kula River.

When completed, the road will significantly shorten the journey from Bolgatanga to Accra.

Enthusiastic welcome

The Upper East Region is the ninth the President is visiting since he began his tour of the country.

Crowds of enthusiastic people from Zebilla and surrounding communities took over the streets of Zebilla and filled the durbar grounds to welcome the President.

Important road

The Bolgatanga-Bawku-Pulimakoum road has been in a state of disrepair for a long time and the people have had high expectations of seeing the road reconstructed.

President Mahama told the gathering that the government took notice of the important role the road played in the socio-economic lives of the people and the nation at large.

He said when the road was completed, it would facilitate the transportation of food to buying centres in southern Ghana.

The road passes through seven districts and nine constituencies.

Massive investment

President Mahama said he had become informed in his travels around the country of the benefits people were deriving from investments the government had made in social and economic infrastructure.

“I've gone round the regions and noticed that infrastructural work that this government has undertaken is massive," he said.

He expressed the hope that the people of Ghana would score high marks for the government and give the NDC a second term in office, come the general election.

Peaceful elections

The President underscored the need for Ghanaians to go into the elections in peace.

He said he would ensure that the security agencies dutifully discharged their obligation of protecting voters during the election period.
