Randy Abbey: Former Good Morning Ghana host appointed Acting COCOBOD CEO

In a significant move for Ghana's cocoa sector, President John Dramani Mahama has named Dr. Ransford Anertey Abbey as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), according to an official letter dated January 21, 2025.

The appointment, which adheres to Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 12(2) of the Ghana Cocoa Board Act, 1984 (P.N.D.C.L. 81), was signed by Dr. Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President. The letter explicitly states, “Dr. Abbey’s appointment is effective immediately and will remain in place pending the constitutionally required advice of the COCOBOD Board, in consultation with the Public Services Commission.”

President Mahama extended his congratulations to Dr. Abbey, expressing his confidence in the new CEO's capability to lead COCOBOD effectively. "President Mahama congratulated Dr. Abbey on his new role and wished him success, expressing confidence in his ability to steer the institution effectively," the letter further noted.

Dr. Abbey's appointment is seen as a strategic move to inject fresh vigour into COCOBOD, an institution pivotal to Ghana's agricultural economy. His role is expected to enhance the strategic direction of the board, which plays a crucial role in supporting the livelihoods of countless cocoa farmers and bolstering national revenue.

This appointment comes on the heels of notable changes in Dr. Abbey's career trajectory. Previously known in media circles as Randy Abbey, he recently stepped down from his long-standing position as the host of the "Good Morning Ghana" show on Metro TV after 23 years. His departure was announced following the December 7 Presidential election, with his final show aired on January 8, 2025.

Randy Abbey also resigned from his position as the Managing Director of Ignite Media Group (IMG) on December 31, 2024, and from the board of IMG. His exit from media was marked by an emotional video tribute on social media, celebrating the "end of an era."

Aside from his media contributions, Abbey is a well-regarded figure in Ghanaian football, holding positions as an Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association and president of Kpando Hearts of Lions Football Club. His contributions to both media and sports were acknowledged in 2006 when he received the Order of the Volta and a Grand Medal for his roles in national media development and Ghana’s performance at the FIFA World Cup in Germany.

The future of "Good Morning Ghana" remains uncertain, with no confirmation yet on whether regular stand-in host Annie Afua Ampofo will take over permanently.

Dr. Abbey's diverse background in media and sports administration is expected to bring a unique perspective to his new role at COCOBOD, potentially steering the board towards new heights in the management and development of Ghana's cocoa industry.
