The housing industry in the Tamale metropolis is picking up fast following the influx of real estate developers into the sprawling metropolis.

Currently, an intra-governmental organisation in the West African sub-region has entered into an agreement with the Tamale Credit Union to provide affordable houses to members of the union at rock bottom prices starting from GH¢15,000 per unit. To begin with, 200 affordable houses are to be provided at Lahagu on the Tamale-Salaga road.

The organisation has the potential of providing 1,000 houses in the near future depending on the availability of land.

Similar investors have also indicated their intention to visit Tamale to acquaint themselves with the opportunities available in the housing sector.

At the moment, the Tamale Metropolitan Assembly is expecting the arrival of a Norwegian delegation and the Bloomberg Group who are keen on using Tamale as the hub for their operations in the housing sector for the West African sub-region.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive (MCE), Mr Abdul-Rahman Gundadow, intimated that he had requested the Presiding Member to liaise with assembly members near Lahagu to secure additional land for the assembly to take advantage of those interventions.

"There is no doubt that the Tamale metropolis is gradually becoming a place where investors wish to do business. Since assuming office, my office has been inundated with requests from a number of investors who have indicated their intention to invest in the housing sector," Mr Gundadow noted.

The MCE observed that some of the investors have already linked up with partners in the metropolis to implement their plans.

He announced that all was set for the beginning of the proposed project to transform the Tamale Airport into an international one.

Mr Gundadow stated that a technical committee to see to the smooth take off of the project has been inaugurated by the Regional Coordinating Council of which he was the chairman.

Touching on unemployment issues in the metropolis, the MCE noted that it was a major headache to him.

He said he has, therefore, discussed the issue with some traditional rulers who have agreed to release some tracts of land at Sagnarigu, Dungu and Dohinayili to the assembly to develop an industrial and agro-processing enclave as a way of creating employment opportunities for the youth.

"I have also started discussions with some consultants to come out with designs for these projects which will be brought later to this august house for approval." he stressed.
