Renewed clashes at Bunkpurugu claim one life

One person was burnt to death while two others sustained gunshot wounds, following renewed chieftaincy clashes at Bunkpurugu in the Northern Region last Thursday night.

The deceased was identified as Gblek Daniel, 58, who was said to be bedridden for sometime and could not come out of his room when it was set ablaze during the violence.

 

Several houses were also set on fire  during the attack.

According to the  Northern Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant  Superintendent of Police Mr Ebenezer Tetteh, who confirmed the incident to the Daily Graphic, the two, who sustained gunshot wounds, were aged 72 and 23.

He said the local police station also came under fire during the attack by some unknown gunmen who were riding on motorbikes.

As of the time of filing this report, calm had returned to the town, but it remained deserted.

Background

Thursday’s clashes was the second this year. The first clash erupted on January 26 this year which led to the death of three persons and the burning down of 35  houses. 

The chieftaincy conflict between the Jafouk and the Jamond royal families has so far claimed 13 lives and  the destruction of many houses.
