Resident donates facility to police at Amanfro

A new police post has been inaugurated at Amanfro, near Kasoa in the Central Region, to contain crime in the wake of recent spate of robbery cases in the area.

The two-room structure was offered by a resident in the area, Dr Kwabena Appiah, who is a victim of four robbery attacks in the area.

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Mohammed Ahmed Alhassan, who inspected the facility, later presented 100 bags of cement and 25,000 concrete blocks to support the construction of a permanent structure for the police in the community.

The Greater Accra Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno, who inaugurated the facility last Thursday, said the initiative was part of measures to protect lives and property of residents of Amanfro and its surrounding areas.

Collaboration

Mr Yohuno said even though the police were determined and prepared to combat crime, they would require the support and collaboration from the people. He therefore urged the residents to “look within their neighbourhood”, since most of the robbers were living among them.

“We are willing to clamp down on the operations of the criminals but we need your assistance and support. You must be willing to give out any information that will lead to the hideout of these criminal gangs,” he indicated.

According to Mr Yohuno, the police had so far managed to arrest one of the robbers at his hideout in Buduburam in the Central Region and added that “he has given us the names of some of his gang members who we would soon apprehend”.

Benefactor

According to Dr Appiah, the new police post used to be a tailoring shop belonging to his wife.

But because “my wife and I can no longer contain the rising robbery cases in this area, we thought it wise to give out the facility to the police,” he explained.

Amanfro chief

The Chief of Ngleshie Amanfro, Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV, commended the police for putting in place measures to clamp down on the operations of the robbers.

He said his elders and residents were prepared to support the security operatives in ensuring peace and safety at the community.

Background

Amanfro and its surrounding communities had, over the last three months, experienced massive robbery attacks which had brought chaos and confusion to the entire town.

On August 15, 2015, a gang raided the American Farm area, within Amanfro, leaving four persons with knife and gun pellet wounds.

The situation, apart from creating fear and panic among residents of the area, had also caused some of them to relocate to safer communities.

As part of the measures to address the situation, the Central Regional Police Command, in partnership with the Kasoa District Police Command, recently in a swoop, arrested 37 people suspected to have been the brains behind those robberies.

The police have also deployed personnel to various areas of Kasoa to ensure security, while other measures were being implemented to address the situation.
