Sam George reaffirms commitment to Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill
The Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has reiterated his firm stance in support of the Anti-LGBTQI+ Bill currently before Parliament.
In an interview with TV3 on Friday, April 11, Mr George said he has reintroduced the Private Member’s Bill and is awaiting a formal invitation from Parliament’s Constitutional, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Committee to advance the legislative process.
“I have not changed my position on the anti-LGBTQI Bill. I have laid the Private Member’s Bill before Parliament,” he said, adding that same-sex practices are, in his view, incompatible with Ghana’s cultural and moral values.
The Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram has been one of the most vocal proponents of the bill, which seeks to criminalise LGBTQ+ activities and advocacy in Ghana.
Earlier, Mr George told the Appointments Committee of Parliament that the Anti-LGBTQI Bill would be reintroduced, affirming:
“If the bill has to be reintroduced by me again, I will do that.”
Supporters of the bill argue that it reflects the country’s religious and cultural norms, while human rights groups have raised concerns over potential infringements on individual freedoms and rights.
President John Dramani Mahama, addressing the issue during a recent meeting with the Catholic Bishops Conference, suggested that a government-sponsored version of the bill could carry more legitimacy and garner broader support.
He also underscored the need for an educational approach that reinforces traditional family values.
The bill continues to generate national and international debate.
