Security operatives urged to uphold human rights

Security operatives in the country have been urged to uphold the human rights of any person they come into contact with in the discharge of their duties.

According to the Regional Investigator and Security Manager of Newmont Regional Office in Ghana, Mr Lawrence Ntim-Gyakari, whether they were within the public law enforcement agencies or they operated as private security persons, security operatives must always respect the rights of community members they worked with.

“Such a practice will save organisations embarrassment and unnecessary lawsuits which ultimately tarnish their reputation. The fact that you are a security operative does not mean you should create problems for your employers,” he said.

Mr Ntim-Gyakri was speaking at the annual general meeting of the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) International, Ghana Chapter, in Accra.

The meeting, which was attended by heads of security from some corporate bodies, police and army officers, security consultants and private investigators, was climaxed with the election of new executives for the Ghana Chapter of ASIS.

ASIS
ASIS works to increase efficiency in the security industry by promoting professionalism among security professionals.

It has branches in more than 100 countries.

Its Ghana branch started operations in 2012.

Upgrade your skills
Mr Ntim-Gyakari, who was elected the new Chairman of the association, emphasised the need for security personnel to upgrade their skills and also acquire accepted international certification, stating that such “certificates will give you the necessary recognition in any part of the world and also keep you abreast of current trends in security operations”.

“The body responsible for this kind of training and certification is ASIS International. The aim of ASIS Ghana is, therefore, to encourage more security professionals in the country to go through this training and ultimately get certified,” he added.

The immediate past Chairman of ASIS Ghana, Captain Joseph Baba Awuni (retd), said security professionals must be abreast of other disciplines to improve their depth of knowledge owing to the complex nature of security operations in the world.
