Shock as mother allegedly murders 2 children in suspected mental health crisis

The quiet of Monday morning was shattered on July 21 along Unity Road in Trans Ekulu, Enugu, Nigeria, when neighbors made a horrifying discovery: two young children—a four-year-old girl and her three-month-old baby brother—were found dead in their home, allegedly killed by their mother.

The suspect, identified as Chidima Arinze, is believed to have committed the act at her residence, No. 47 Unity Road, in what police have described as one of the most disturbing domestic incidents in recent memory

According to police sources, the tragic event unfolded around 9:00 a.m. when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Trans Ekulu Division received a distress call. Officers were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, they found the lifeless bodies of Esther Arinze, aged 4, and Chibusoma Arinze, just 3 months old.

Both children reportedly bore injuries consistent with wounds inflicted by a sharp object. The scene was promptly secured, and forensic documentation was carried out before the suspect was taken into custody without resistance.

The children’s remains were conveyed to the Enugu State University Teaching Hospital (ESUT), Parklane, where medical personnel confirmed their deaths. Their bodies have since been deposited at the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Preliminary investigations are ongoing at the Trans Ekulu Police Division. The case is expected to be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a more in-depth and discreet inquiry.

While no official motive has been established, early speculation from residents suggests the possibility of a postpartum mental health crisis, though this remains unconfirmed.

“This is something we’ve never seen before in our neighborhood,” said a resident who requested anonymity. “She was quiet and kept to herself. No one had any idea she might have been struggling.”

The Enugu State Police Command has assured the public of a thorough and sensitive investigation.

“We recognize the emotional gravity of this case,” a senior police official said. “Investigators are examining all angles, including the psychological condition of the suspect.”

The Trans Ekulu community remains in shock and mourning over the tragic loss.

“We are heartbroken,” said a neighboUr. “Two innocent children are gone, and their mother is in custody. There are no winners in this.”
