#SONA2025: Electric motorbikes to replace 'petrol Okadas' under hire-purchase scheme

Commercial motorbike riders, popularly known as Okada operators, will soon have access to electric motorbikes through a hire-purchase scheme aimed at reducing fuel costs and increasing their earnings.

President John Dramani Mahama made the announcement during his State of the Nation Address (#SONA2025) in Parliament on Thursday, February 27, 2025.

“To support our young Okada riders, we will introduce electric motorbikes on a hire-purchase scheme. This will eliminate petrol costs and make their businesses more profitable,” he said.

Mr Mahama added that the initiative would be implemented in partnership with the Youth Development and Interior Ministries, which would also train riders in road safety regulations, financial literacy, and digital skills.

He noted that the switch to electric motorbikes would not only reduce transport costs for operators but also contribute to Ghana’s green energy transition by cutting down on petrol consumption.

“We recognise the role of the Okada business in providing jobs for young people and serving the transport needs of many Ghanaians. This intervention will improve safety, sustainability, and profitability,” he said.
