#SONA2025: Government to set up cybersecurity court to tackle online fraud and digital crimes

President John Mahama has announced plans to establish a Cybersecurity Court to tackle the increasing cases of online fraud, cybercrime, and digital financial scams in Ghana.

Delivering the 2025 State of the Nation Address (SONA) in Parliament on Thursday, February 27 2025, he said the court will focus on cases involving internet fraud, hacking, social media-related crimes, and financial cyber offences.

Mr Mahama noted that cybercrime is becoming a major threat to Ghana’s digital economy, with the country losing more than $50 million to internet fraud in 2024 alone.

He said the new court will have judges and prosecutors trained specifically in digital crimes to speed up the handling of such cases.

“The digital economy is the future, but cybercriminals are taking advantage of weak enforcement. This government will not allow our citizens and businesses to suffer because of online fraud. The Cybersecurity Court will ensure offenders are swiftly prosecuted,” he said.

The court will operate under the Judicial Service of Ghana and is expected to be fully functional by September 2025.

It will also work with the Cyber Security Authority, the Ghana Police Service, and financial institutions to track and prosecute online fraudsters.
