Stop sale of food, water under unhygienic conditions

The Management of the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) has asked city authorities to stop food vendors from selling food and water under unhygienic conditions in Accra.

According to the hospital,  although cholera cases were reported from all over the metropolis, it has identified that some particular areas in the metropolis had been hit so hard by the disease owing to unhygienic conditions.

The areas mentioned are Agege, Chorkor, Korle Gonno, James Town, Kokomba Market and Agbogbloshie.

Therefore, the hospital  urged city authorities to mobilise its environmental and infection control teams into those areas and suspend the sale of food and water under unhygienic conditions.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the hospital, Mr Mustapha Salifu, said the hospital made the observation from the cases that had been reported at the Korle Bu Polyclinic.

It said although the clinic received cases from all parts of the metropolis, the areas mentioned reported the most cases.

There is overwhelming outbreak of cholera in the country, especially in the Accra metropolis, recording about 7,800 cases and more than 50 deaths.

The Korle Bu Polyclinic has recorded over 1,154 with 13 deaths.

The hospital, therefore, called on opinion leaders in the communities and leaders in the various households to add their voices to the cleanliness campaign to help curb the rising cholera cases in the city.

“We entreat individuals to be mindful of the food and water they take in. Individuals who show signs of cholera should immediately report at the nearest health facility for treatment”, it advised.
