These roads have been temporarily closed on Ghana’s Independence Day

The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure of several roads in Accra as part of security arrangements for Ghana’s 68th Independence Anniversary Celebration at the Jubilee House today.

In a press release signed by Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Police informed the public that specific roads will be closed to vehicular traffic and will only be reopened after the event.

Roads Closed to Traffic

The following roads have been blocked as part of the security measures:

  • Liberation Road at Opeibea Intersection
  • 37 Intersection towards the Central Business District (CBD)
  • Independence Avenue at Ako-Adjei Bypass
  • Jawaharlal Nehru Road at Switchback Road
  • Presidential Drive around Jubilee House (blocked at John Hammond Road at TV3 Junction and Kanda Link)

Alternative routes and diversions

To ease traffic congestion, motorists are advised to use the following diversion routes:

  • Motorists on Liberation Road from Airport towards Accra will be diverted at Opeibea Traffic Intersection onto the Alliance Française Road to connect Obasanjo Highway, or onto the Airport Bypass to link Giffard Road.
  • Motorists on Independence Avenue from Accra direction will be diverted at Ako Adjei Interchange onto Ring Road Central, either towards Osu or Kawukudi.
  • Motorists from Club 10 and Kanda Post Office will be diverted at Kanda Link onto Sunyani and Kade Avenue to connect with Kanda Highway.

Parking restrictions and security measures

The Police have warned that no vehicles will be allowed to park in unauthorised areas or along blocked roads. However, security vehicles and those transporting dignitaries will be permitted entry after thorough checks.

To ensure smooth traffic management, Traffic Police Officers will be stationed to direct motorists to the appropriate car parks and diversion routes. Additionally, towing services will be on standby to remove any abandoned, disabled, or wrongly parked vehicles.

Public cooperation urged

The Ghana Police Service is urging the general public, especially motorists, to adhere to these arrangements and plan their routes accordingly.

“Motorists are further advised to take note of these arrangements and plan alternative routes before embarking on their journeys,” the statement read.

With security and smooth traffic flow being a priority, the Police have called for full cooperation to ensure the success of Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebrations.
