Tsatsu Tsikata to be honoured with 3-day celebration marking 50 years at the Ghana Bar

One of Ghana’s most eminent legal minds, Tsatsu Tsikata, will be celebrated this month as he marks 50 years since his call to the Ghana Bar, a milestone that has drawn admiration from across the legal, academic, corporate and governance communities.

A three-day commemorative event, under the theme “Celebrating 50 Years of Tsatsu Tsikata at the Ghana Bar – 1975 to 2025,” will be held from August 6-8, 2025, at the Accra International Conference Centre, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily.

The event promises an engaging series of conversations, memories and reflections from colleagues, former students, friends and associates, both in Ghana and abroad.

The first day will delve into Mr. Tsikata’s legal practice, with discussions reflecting his work in the courts, military tribunals, the corporate world, and even during his incarceration. Prominent legal practitioners and former students Tony Lithur and Thaddeus Sory will lead the conversation.

They will be joined by Goosie Tanoh, Presidential Adviser on the 24-Hour Economy, and Nana Appia Kyei, Director of Kosmos Energy Ghana, both of whom worked with Tsikata during his tenure as Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC). The session will be chaired by Justice Emile Short, Ghana’s first Commissioner of Human Rights and Administrative Justice and former judge at the UN International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

On August 7, the spotlight will shift to Tsikata’s academic legacy. Former students such as Kwesi Quartey, Professor Martin Tsamenyi, and Christopher Quaye will share their experiences. The evening will also feature a lecture by Professor Raymond Atuguba, outgoing Dean of the University of Ghana Law School, on “Challenges of Legal Education in Ghana.” The day’s proceedings will be chaired by Rt. Hon. Doe Adjaho, former Speaker of Parliament and a former student of Tsikata.

The final day of the event, August 8, will focus on Tsikata’s political and national influence. Mrs Betty Mould Idrisu, a former Attorney General, and Kyeretwie Opoku, a lawyer and former GNPC associate, will deliver remarks before Tsikata himself takes the stage to share personal reflections. Veteran journalist and Managing Editor of the Insight newspaper, Mr Kwesi Pratt Jnr, will chair the closing session and offer final comments.

Organisers say the celebration is not only about honouring a single man’s accomplishments but also recognising his profound impact on Ghana’s legal, academic, and political spheres.

In addition to the live event, the public is invited to share personal congratulatory messages and tributes via a dedicated online platform at: https://forms.office.com/r/TZWKTTCyAh.
