Twin fires strike Accra: Tourist Centre and Madina slum damaged

Two separate fire incidents in Accra have caused extensive damage to property and displaced dozens of residents. Authorities have launched investigations into the cause of both incidents.

Around 1:00 a.m. on Monday, August 4, at the Accra Tourist Information Centre the second fire incident occurred.

Preliminary reports suggest the flames may have originated from the kitchen area of Rockz Waakye, a popular food vendor located on the premises.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) responded promptly, deploying five fire tenders to contain the fire.

No injuries or fatalities were recorded. The exact cause of the blaze remains under investigation.

A few hours earlier, on Sunday, August 3, a major fire engulfed a cluster of wooden and metal structures near the Madina Redco Flats.

The GNFS received an emergency call at 12:36 p.m., and the first appliance from the Madina Fire Station arrived within minutes. Reinforcements from Legon, Abelempke, and GNFS Headquarters brought the total response to five fire engines.

Officials say the fire, which is believed to have started at a washing bay, destroyed more than 50 structures and metal containers. Several families have been left homeless.

The GNFS has urged residents to remain vigilant, report fire hazards promptly, and comply with basic safety precautions, especially in high-risk areas.

Investigations into both incidents are currently ongoing.
