The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) Task Force has arrested two Chinese nationals for allegedly engaging in illegal mining within the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Jomoro area of the Western North Region, the Presidential Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu has said.
He said the arrests took place on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, as part of the Task Force’s ongoing crackdown on illegal mining and its impact on the environment.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu made this known in a Facebook post on Wednesday [Oct 9, 2025].
He said the suspects were apprehended during an enforcement exercise led by NAIMOS operatives.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu said the Task Force also seized a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 with registration number GR 442–14, four excavators, and two heavy-duty water pumping machines. In addition, twelve makeshift structures believed to have served as operational bases were destroyed on site.
“The NAIMOS Task Force remains resolute in its mission to uproot illegal mining and restore order in the country’s mining areas,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
This arrest follows operations in the Western Region earlier in the week. On Sunday, October 5, NAIMOS conducted a raid at Aboso, and on Tuesday, October 7, the Task Force moved along the Ankobra River and Kamei Stream, destroying equipment and makeshift mining camps.
