Two illegal miners killed

An illegal mining siteDisaster struck at the Obuasi mine of AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) on Wednesday when a pit in which eight galamsey miners were working caved in, killing two and injuring six.

The illegal miners had sneaked into the prohibited area in the night to dig for ore but luck ran out for them when the pit caved in.

The police have identified one of the dead as Isahaku Bukari, 49, while the other deceased, a male, is yet to be identified.

Three of the injured persons who were in critical conditions were sent to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, while the three others were on admission at the AngloGold Ashanti Hospital in Obuasi.

Their names were given as Adams Ibrahim, 33; Kwadwo Agyekum, 36; Yakubu Fuseini, 30; Adams Mensa, 27; Adams Wahab, 29 and Malik Jibril, 32.

According to the Obuasi Divisional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mr Kofi Dwumfuor Berchie, who briefed the Daily Graphic yesterday on the incident said it happened at  8p.m on Wednesday, October 30.

Mr Berchie said the illegal miners sneaked into the concession of the company at Obuasi unnoticed to mine for the ore.

While digging the rocky area, the pit caved in, trapping them underground.
