Union leaders urged to enhance skills
Leaders Of unionised staff have been advised to educate themselves on labour and industrial relations issues and put them to positive use to ensure a harmonious relationship between the various parties at the workplace.

Union leaders must also see themselves as partners of management for a peaceful co-existence.
The Director of Newspapers at the Graphic Communications Group Limited (GCGL), Mr Yaw Boadu Ayeboafoh, who gave this advice at a three-day training workshop for the company’s local union, described the training as timely, as it would afford members the opportunity to upgrade their knowledge on the latest labour practices as well as improve their leadership skills.
The Deputy General Secretary of the Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU), Brother Morgan Ayawine, stressed the importance of union leaders being well-versed in industrial relations issues to be more effective.
“As leaders, it is important to have the Labour Law at your fingertips and be abreast of the best practices in resolving labour issues,” he said.
He stressed the need for fairness at the work place, adding that it was no use for either management or union to push for their parochial interest.
The Chairman of the Graphic Local Union, Henry Addo, said he considered the training a timely intervention as it would afford the union leaders, especially the newly elected ones, to enhance their leadership skills.
Thirty participants, made up of the executive and shop stewards, attended the three-day event which had Mr Emmanuel Yabani and Lucy Adepa as facilitators.
Among the topics treated at the course were an overview of the Labour Act, settling of industrial disputes, grievances handling, work ethics and productivity, role of union executives and shop stewards and worker-management relationship.
