‘Use school facilities to enhance academic work’

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Mr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, has criticised head teachers of Millennium City Schools who have failed to utilise the facilities provided in those schools to enhance academic work.

He said he recently visited one of the Millennium City Project Schools in Accra and realised that although the school was inaugurated about six weeks ago, the students had never stepped into the library, adding that the library was full of dust and the attendant just sat idly every day.

Mr Vanderpuije expressed the sentiments when he inaugurated a nine-unit classroom block with a computer laboratory, a library, an office for teachers and a washroom for the Pig Farm Cluster of Schools in the Ayawaso Central Constituency in Accra.

Schools in Greater Accra

This brings to seven the number of Millennium City Schools in the AMA. The seven are among the 122 schools that are being constructed in the Greater Accra Region under the Millennium City Project to phase out the aged-old shift system in public schools.

Mr Vanderpuije, therefore, urged the head teachers to open the auxiliary facilities such as laboratories and libraries provided in the schools for use by the students, stressing that the libraries in particular were needed to boost the interest of students in reading to promote quality education.

He also advised the students to take advantage of the opportunities provided them to get the best education and advance to the next level to become more useful in the competitive job market.

Quality education

the Metropolitan Director of Education, Mrs Ernestina Mensah, lauded the efforts of the chief executive and the assembly to improve access to quality education in the metropolis.

She said with the new edifice, enrolment in the school would increase as students would now have all the facilities they needed to study as compared to the use of the old dilapidated building that was on the verge of collapse.
