VIDEO: GAF arrests man for impersonation and spreading false claims in viral video
The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has arrested a man, Alex Cobbinah, after a viral video showed him wearing a Ghana Navy vest and displaying military items while claiming that the incoming administration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama plans to sack soldiers recruited through protocol means.
In the video, the man, posing as a soldier, sent a message to the President-elect, causing alarm and attracting widespread public attention.
The Military Police swiftly launched an investigation, successfully tracking and arresting the suspect at his residence at Madina Zongo Junction in Accra. Following his arrest, he was handed over to the Ghana Police Service for further investigations and possible prosecution.
The GAF, in a statement issued today, December 17, and signed by the Director General of Public Relations, Brigadier General E. Aggrey-Quashie, condemned the act as illegal and cautioned the public against falling victim to individuals presenting themselves as middlemen or agents for military recruitment.
“The public is hereby cautioned that anyone who pays monies to agents or individuals with the hope of securing enlistment into GAF is equally culpable in the fraudulent act,” the statement warned.
The GAF also reminded the public that the National Liberation Council Decree (NLCD) 177 of 1967 remains in effect. The decree states that “No person shall wear or use any military uniforms, equipment, or accoutrements or other material unless he or she is a member of the Armed Forces of Ghana.”
The misuse of military attire, according to the GAF, poses a serious threat to public safety as it could facilitate impersonation and enable criminal activities.
The statement further urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities involving unauthorised use of military uniforms or materials to safeguard national security.
