Firefighters have successfully contained a major blaze that gutted several shops at Kantamanto Tazani Lane near Ecobank in Accra in the early hours of Tuesday, October 21, 2025.
According to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), the incident was reported at 1:31 a.m., with the first fire appliance arriving at 1:42 a.m. to commence firefighting operations. In all, seven fire engines and a Turntable Ladder were deployed from the Circle, Industrial Area, Accra Regional Headquarters, Madina, and Legon fire stations, alongside two appliances from the National Headquarters.
The GNFS confirmed that the fire, which destroyed portions of commercial structures, was confined at 4:49 a.m. after more than three hours of intense firefighting.
“The Acting Chief Fire Officer, Daniella Mawusi Ntow Sarpong, is currently at the scene to assess the situation and obtain first-hand information on the incident,” the statement said. It added that the Director of Operations, the Greater Accra Regional Commander, and other senior officers were also on site to provide operational support.
One firefighter reportedly suffered smoke inhalation and asphyxiation during the operation but was promptly treated by National Ambulance Service personnel before being transported to hospital for further medical attention.
The GNFS said rigorous firefighting operations were still underway to completely extinguish residual flames and secure the area.
The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, and investigations are expected to begin once the site is deemed safe.
