Water supply restored to Tema and environs following repair of 42-inch pipeline
Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has announced the successful completion of critical repair works on a burst 42-inch transmission main, restoring water supply to thousands of residents in Tema and surrounding communities after a period of disruption.
In a public notice issued today, the state-owned utility company confirmed that "repair works on the burst 42-inch transmission line at Kpong have been successfully completed at 20:00 GMT on Tuesday, 20th January 2026." The rupture had impacted production and distribution from a key water treatment facility.

Following the urgent engineering intervention, "production and pumping to the Tema Booster Station commenced at 21:00 GMT on the same day."
This allowed for the gradual replenishment of the distribution network, leading to the resumption of service hours later. The statement provided a precise timeline, noting that "water supply to Tema, New Town, Kpone, and adjoining communities began at 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday, 21st January 2026."
While service has been restored, GWL has cautioned customers that full normality will return progressively. "GWL assures customers that supply will continue to stabilise progressively across all affected areas," the statement read, acknowledging that some neighbourhoods may experience low pressure or intermittent flow as the system fully recovers.
The company extended an apology for the inconvenience caused by the essential repairs. "Management of GWL sincerely thank the public for the patience and cooperation during the repair period and apologises for the inconvenience caused," the notice stated. GWL also committed to providing "further updates... as the situation progresses."
The swift resolution of the fault will come as a relief to residents and businesses in the affected areas, which include industrial and residential zones. The company has encouraged customers with ongoing issues to contact its customer service lines for assistance.
