It was on the theme: ‘Climate Smart Agriculture and Technology Profiling.’

The workshop was organised by the Animal Research Institute of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR). It was also targeted at sharing information and ideas that would help to boost agricultural development in the country.

The opening ceremony was addressed by Mr K. Osei-Poku,  the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Director, on behalf of the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Samuel Sarpong. He said climate change posed a major challenge to development globally, particularly for countries such as Ghana whose economy was largely dependent on agriculture.

He said it was important for us, as a country, to take several steps towards the development of strategies to help improve on agricultural activities across the country through careful study and analysis of our climate.

He said a careful study and analysis of climate change ought to be undertaken in order to respond rightly to the effects of global warming on agriculture and related challenges.

Dr Sarpong pointed out that the government was interested in making the agriculture sector very capable of meeting the food needs of the people and that it was through workshops such as this that farmers and policy makers could receive forward- looking and vital information on farming activities.

The Chief Executive Officer for the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA), Mr Kojo Bonsu, said the workshop was timely and followed several initiatives the government had taken towards developing comprehensive strategies for adaptation to climate change.

He said the government launched the national policy on climate change with a view to achieving sustainable socio-economic growth.

The Ghana Chapter Chairman for Climate Change for Africa Food Security, Dr N. Karbo, said the workshop would work for a functional linkage among community level practitioners, research and policy makers in order to promote agricultural production in the country.
