Eastern Regional Hospital infrastructure gaps will be addressed — Minister

The Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua has launched its centenary anniversary with several activities lined up to mark the 100-year milestone.

The activities will include a blood donation exercise, free medical screening and outreach programmes, health walk, clean-up exercise and radio talk show, among others, which will lead to a grand durbar in December.

There will also be awards and recognition for deserving staff who distinguish themselves in the line of duty, as well as a thanksgiving service.

To unveil the 100th anniversary logo, the hospital organised a float which began at its premises, through some principal streets of Koforidua and later ended at the hospital.

The event with the theme; "A Century of Quality Health care, Innovation and Excellence", brought together doctors, nurses, administrators, health directors, retired medical directors and administrators, Members of Parliament (MPs) and stakeholders who paid tribute to the institution’s remarkable journey from a small clinic which started at the Mangoase District Magistrate Court manned by a midwife to a major referral facility at Koforidua in the region.

Quality health care

Speaking at the launch, the Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Saanwie Suntaa Aiden, who highlighted the hospital’s transformation over the years, stated that the staff would continue to provide quality healthcare services to the people, especially patients in the region and beyond.

“Currently, we serve not only the people of Koforidua but also referrals from other municipalities, districts and regions, offering emergency, pharmacy, laboratory, radiology, surgery, sickle cell, asthma, and specialised services among others", Dr Aiden stated.

He said the hospital’s centenary vision was to further position it very well to continue to provide quality healthcare services to all manner of persons, including deprived communities and villages across the region.

Dr Aiden, therefore, encouraged all stakeholders, friends of the hospital, corporate institutions, alumni and members of the public to actively participate in the activities and support such a noble cause.

Patients at centre

For his part, the Eastern Regional Director of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr Damien Puguyire, whose speech was read by the Deputy Director of Public Health, Dr Moses Barimah Djimatey, said the hospital had pursued quality health care, placing patients at the centre of its services and earning the trust and confidence of communities in the region.

He indicated that the hospital had embraced innovation by adapting to evolving healthcare needs and strengthening service delivery through improved technologies, systems and professional practices.

The hospital, Dr Djimatey indicated, consistently pursued excellence, striving to raise standards and improve health care outcomes for all, especially those who needed its services.

Commendation

The Eastern Regional Minister, Rita Akosua Adjei Awatey, who praised the resilience and dedication of the hospital’s staff over the years, said the provision of healthcare services to the people had been the best.

She urged health professionals to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, embrace feedback, and always put patients at the facility first.

Mrs Awatey lauded the hospital's achievements and assured the management of continued government support to address infrastructure and resource gaps.

She said the government had directed the contractor working on the hospital to return to the site to ensure the immediate completion of the facility.

She indicated that the celebration of the hospital’s milestone should therefore encourage doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers to continue to work very hard to improve healthcare services for the people in the region and Ghana as a whole.
