VIDEO: Ablekuma North Rerun: NPP Candidate Nana Akua Afriyie, Hawa Koomson assaulted at polling station
Chaos broke out at Ablekuma North’s parliamentary rerun after some unidentified men stormed a polling station and assaulted NPP candidate Nana Akua Afriyie and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson.
Eyewitnesses described the attackers’ arrival as highly coordinated, sending voters and electoral officials into panic. The sudden intrusion brought voting to a temporary halt as security personnel struggled to restore order.
The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, was also assaulted during the chaos. Former Fisheries Minister and former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, was attacked by the thugs when she arrived at the polling station.
Both victims reportedly sustained injuries, with party supporters expressing outrage over the security lapse. Despite an increased security presence across 19 polling stations, the police were unable to prevent the incident or maintain calm in the immediate aftermath.
The Electoral Commission (EC) organised the rerun to resolve an electoral dispute that dates back to the December 7, 2024, general elections. Ablekuma North has been without a Member of Parliament for months due to the controversy surrounding the initial results.
Background
The Ablekuma North parliamentary election re-run is intended to conclude the collation of the 2024 Parliamentary Election results, with 261 polling stations already collated.
Currently, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate, Nana Akua Afriyie, leads with 32,512 votes, holding a slim margin of 48 votes over the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, who has garnered 32,464 votes.
The seat remains keenly contested, as 6,639 eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots in the 19 polling stations where the re-run is taking place.
