Amenfi Central MP says he is not worried about his seat being declared vacant for going independent in Election 2024

I am not worried about my parliamentary seat being declared vacant for opting to contest the next parliamentary election as an independent candidate, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Amenfi Central, Peter Yaw Kwakye-Ackah has said.

He said for now, his focus is solely on his campaign as an independent candidate.

He said the NDC treated him unfairly in the parliamentary primary after paying his filing fee and even as an incumbent MP, the party went ahead and declared his opponent as an unopposed aspirant.

This is why he decided to go independent after the party did not allow him to re-contest the December 2024 election on its ticket.

Together with the Amenfi Central MP, two other incumbent MPs on the ticket of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Cynthia Mamle Morrison for Agona West and Kwadjo Asante for Suhum have filed to contest the December 7 parliamentary elections as independent candidates.

A fourth MP, Andrew Asiamah Amoako for Fomena, the current Deputy Speaker of Fomena, who is in Parliament as an independent MP has also filed to contest the December 7 election on the ticket of the NPP.

Following this, the Member of Parliament for Tamale, Haruna Iddrisu on Tuesday in Parliament argued that they have crossed carpets by the action and therefore want the Speaker of Parliament to declare their seats vacant.

In a radio interview with Accra-based Citi FM on Tuesday [October 15], Mr Kwakye-Ackah argued the NDC did not treat him well and expressed dissatisfaction with the NDC's internal processes.

He accused the party of unfair treatment after endorsing his opponent, Joana Gyan Cudjoe, as its parliamentary candidate for Amenfi Central.

"I've been treated unfairly. If the party intends to rerun primary, they should give everyone a fair chance. They took my nomination fee of GH¢45,000, only to declare my opponent unopposed. That’s unacceptable. If the people want me, I will stand as an independent," he stated.
