Achraf Hakimi rape case: French prosecutors demand criminal trial for PSG star

French prosecutors have requested that Moroccan football star and Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) full-back, Achraf Hakimi, be put on trial over allegations that he raped a 24-year-old woman in February 2023; a claim the player firmly denies.

In a statement to AFP on Friday, the Nanterre prosecutor's office said it had formally asked the investigating judge to refer the case to a criminal court.

“It is now up to the investigating magistrate to make a decision within the framework of his order,” the prosecutor's office confirmed.

Hakimi, 26, was initially charged with rape in March 2023 following a complaint by the woman, who alleged that the footballer invited her to his home in Boulogne-Billancourt, a suburb of Paris, after connecting on Instagram.

According to reports, the woman claims the encounter occurred while Hakimi’s wife and children were away on holiday.

The footballer has consistently denied the accusations and maintains his innocence throughout the ongoing legal proceedings.

The case has cast a shadow over what has otherwise been a high point in Hakimi’s career. The Moroccan international was instrumental in PSG’s historic UEFA Champions League triumph in May 2025, scoring the opening goal in their emphatic 5-0 final win over Inter Milan.

He also played a pivotal role in Morocco’s remarkable run to the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar—the first African and Arab nation to reach that stage.

As the investigation reaches a critical stage, the judge will now decide whether to accept the prosecution’s request and commit Hakimi to trial.

No official date has been set, and neither the player nor his legal team has made any recent public statement regarding the development.

If committed to trial, Hakimi could face proceedings before a French criminal court, a move that would undoubtedly attract significant international attention.
