Ofori Amponsah: I wasn't worthy of Daddy Lumba’s mentorship
Highlife musician Ofori Amponsah has paid an emotional tribute to the late music legend Charles Kwadwo Fosu, popularly known as Daddy Lumba, describing himself as unworthy of the immense mentorship and fatherly support he received from the celebrated icon.
According to him, the late Highlife great saw potential in him and dedicated time, energy and mentorship that significantly shaped his music career.
"I don't have much to say. Of course, I had my biological father, but Daddy Lumba was someone who equally played the fatherly role, mentored me. I didn't deserve this, but when he realised the gift and grace upon my life, he took me in and mentored me," he said.
He continued:"For six years of friendship and mentorship, he walked me through life, the industry, and everything I needed to know. I remember the first time we met, he told me I had unique grace and I would be just like him. I’m even short of words."
Ofori Amponsah, who rose to prominence in the early 2000s, owes a significant part of his breakthrough to Daddy Lumba.
Their collaboration on the 1999 hit album Wo Ho Kyere is widely credited with launching Ofori Amponsah’s career and establishing him as a household name in Ghanaian Highlife music. The pair enjoyed a close bond, both personally and professionally, with Daddy Lumba often publicly praising Ofori Amponsah’s talent.
Reflecting on the reality of Daddy Lumba’s passing, the Otoolege crooner said, “Sometimes I feel his death is not true, but it’s God who gave him to us, and He has taken him too at the time He feels is right.”
Daddy Lumba, who passed away earlier this month, was one of Ghana’s most revered and influential musicians, with a career spanning over three decades.
His unique voice, timeless melodies and mastery of the Highlife genre earned him an enduring place in Ghana’s musical history.
In honour of his memory, a Book of Condolence was officially opened last Tuesday, welcoming fans, dignitaries and industry players to pay tribute to the late icon.
Additionally, a vigil is scheduled for this Saturday at the Independence Square in Accra, where fellow musicians, fans and loved ones will gather to celebrate his life and legacy through music and rem
