Ashanti Regional Minister advises civil servants

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Mr Eric Opoku, has advised civil and public servants to prepare for their retirement while in active service so as not to become a liability to the state.

He stressed that it would be suicidal for a retiree to seek additional years to enable him or her to prepare and the demand is rejected by the authorities simply because the young ones also need to take the place to serve their country.

Mr Opoku gave the advice when he spoke at a gettogether of the Ashanti Regional Staff Welfare Association’s (ARCCSWA) end-of-year 2013 in Kumasi.

At the same function, 78 retirees of the association were presented with certificates of recognition.

They include all civil /local government service workers in the Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) and the 30 metropolitan, municipal and district assemblies (MMDAs)

Mr Opoku commended the staff of the RCC for their co-operation that had contributed immensely to the development of the region, and urged them to keep it up.

The minister, however, advised them to be punctual at work and also to refrain from closing before the actual time because such behaviour affected productivity.

Mr Opoku also commended the retirees for a good work done and prayed that the Almighty God would guide them at all times.

The Chief Director of the RCC, Mr Kofi Dwumor Asubonteng, urged the staff to ensure that they worked assiduously to justify their salary.

He was of the belief that 2014 would see a major breakthrough for effective development.

The Chairman of the ARCCSWA, Mr Douglas N.K. Annoful, noted that last year, the association honoured eight of their members who compulsorily retired from the service.

He said the association, realising the good working relationship between the RCC and the various MMDAs, decided to expand the coverage of the programme to include all retiring staff of the 30 MMDAs in the region.

He appealed to the management of the various MMDAs in the region to strengthen their staff welfare scheme by replicating these initiatives as a means to motivate their workers to work hard to realise their respective goals.

Ms Mercy B. Acheampong, Ashanti Regional Chairperson of the CLOSSAG, commended the workers for their good work.

She announced that the CLOSSAG would provide each of the retirees GH¢200 plus a full piece of the CLOSSAG cloth.
