The Asokwa Police have arrested Mr Tony Nyame, the immediate past District Chief Executive (DCE) for Atwima Kwanwoma, for allegedly stealing a vehicle belonging to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr Nyame, who has since been granted police enquiry bail, is alleged to have used a duplicate key to drive away the vehicle from the residence of one of the party officials at Techiman Merewadwa, but he has denied stealing the said vehicle and being arrested.
In an interview with the Daily Graphic, Mr Nyame said he had been keeping the vehicle in his capacity as the aspiring parliamentary candidate on the ticket of the NDC and added that there was an agreement between him and the party officials that he should keep the vehicle, and that at anytime the party needed the vehicle, he would give it out.
He said that about three months ago, the party officials went for the vehicle and never returned it; hence, his action.
However, the Asokwa Divisional Police Crime Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Simon Denteh, told the Daily Graphic that the police received a report from officials of the party in the constituency that their Mahindra vehicle, with registration number GE 7332-12, was missing.
He said the complainants added that they last saw the car being driven by the accused at about 2 a.m. last Friday, which made the police arrest him.
According to Mr Denteh, after interrogation, the suspect refused to give the car back to the party, insisting that he could only hand over the ignition key.
ASP Denteh said the police consequently detained him, after which he was given an enquiry bail.
He added that the police are waiting for a statement from the party to know the way forward.
