CHASS calls for immediate release of outstanding funds to schools
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) has issued an urgent call to the Ministry of Education for the immediate release of all outstanding funds owed to secondary schools across the country.
In a letter dated December 20, 2024, and addressed to the Minister of Education, CHASS highlighted the financial challenges facing schools, particularly with the scheduled reopening set for January 3, 2025.

The letter, signed by CHASS National Secretary Primus Baro, raised concerns over several unresolved issues, including unpaid recurrent funds, arrears for perishable items, transportation costs for food distribution and unsettled utility bills. Despite a recent partial disbursement, CHASS pointed out that many schools, especially single-track and day schools, were excluded from the funds, leaving them in financial distress.
CHASS stressed that these financial constraints are undermining the ability of school heads to provide quality education and ensure the well-being of students.
The organisation called on the Ministry of Education to prioritise the release of all outstanding recurrent funds, arrears for perishable items, funds for transporting food items to schools, and funds to settle utility bills.
The letter warned that without the immediate resolution of these financial issues, it would be impossible for schools to reopen on January 3, 2025, as planned.
