Democracy has won – Watch the moment Bryan Acheampong conceded to 'big brother' Bawumia

Former Minister of Food and Agriculture and New Patriotic Party presidential aspirant, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has conceded defeat in the party’s presidential primary, congratulating former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as provisional results pointed to his victory.

Dr Acheampong’s concession came through a telephone conversation with Dr Bawumia, shortly after voting concluded across the country. In the call, he acknowledged the outcome of the internal contest and described the process as a triumph for the party’s democratic tradition.

“I just called to congratulate you for a very good elections, you have done well. I think this is a God factor, so let's keep it like that. Big brother, congratulations, democracy has won. Internal elections has won,” Dr Acheampong said.

The Abetifi Member of Parliament, who was among five contenders seeking the endorsement of 211,849 delegates in the closely watched primary, indicated his readiness to bring his campaign to a close and throw his support behind the presumptive winner. He said he would meet Dr Bawumia at the formal declaration to conclude all outstanding matters and signal unity within the party.

Dr Acheampong’s concession follows a pattern of early acceptance by some contenders as results from constituencies across the country showed Dr Bawumia opening a commanding lead. The development is expected to ease post-primary tensions and help the party consolidate ahead of the next phase of its political preparations.

The NPP presidential primary, which featured Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, Kwabena Agyei Agyepong and Dr Acheampong, was conducted nationwide without biometric verification devices, placing emphasis on internal party structures and delegate registers.

By publicly congratulating Dr Bawumia and committing to meet him at the official declaration, Dr Acheampong reinforced calls for cohesion among party members, as the NPP turns its attention from internal competition to broader electoral strategy.
