The District Chief Executive, Mr Ibrahim Kweku Dawson, made that known at the third ordinary meeting of the second session of the first assembly of the Ekumfi District at Essarkyir in the Central Region.

Mr Dawson said the assembly generated GH¢15,000.00 last year, and described the amount as a massive improvement in its revenue generation drive.

Mr Dawson said that was made possible due to the innovative ideas brought to bear on the members and management, as well as the implementation of programmes such as revenue sensitisation, frequent meetings with revenue collectors and the mounting of barriers to check revenue evaders.

He said the assembly, in a bid to generate more revenue, intended to embark on various initiatives and strategies which included continuous sensitisation, compilation of data on small and micro enterprises, upgrading of the Essuehyia lorry park and the establishment of a market complex at Ekumfi Swedru.

He said the assembly had received two quarter tranches of its share of the District Assemblies Common Fund to the tune of GH¢316,619.35 and that the funds were being disbursed in accordance with its 2013 budget.

According to Mr Dawson, all projects in the budget would be implemented pending the release of the rest of the common fund and that the projects were targeted at health, education, self-help projects, a vegetable market at Eyisam, rehabilitation of feeder roads, accommodation, provision of water, waste management and electricity.

The district chief executive said new projects in the 2014 budget included the implementation of the rural enterprise programme to assist micro and small businesses to improve upon their businesses to improve the local economy.

On the street naming exercise, he said the first phase would start at Essarkyir, Essuehyia, Eyisam, Ekrwafo, Otuam and Ekumfi Swedru.

Mr Dawson announced that the Australian government had indicated its readiness to upgrade the Essuehyia Health Centre into a polyclinic to improve health delivery services in the district.

He said the assembly was renovating the Essarkyir community centre to accommodate some of the decentralised departments.

He said the assembly would support smallholder farmers and micro and small enterprises in business management to address income poverty and support small-scale irrigation schemes.

He further stated that the Japan International Corporation Agency had approved the appointment of a Japanese economic development volunteer to assist in the implementation of the local economic development initiatives to address income poverty and support farmers in vegetable cultivation.

He said the assembly would organise a district congress and homecoming for its prominent citizens to tap their expertise, resources and knowledge for the total development of the district.
