Farmers deserve daily ovation — Nduom

Dr Papa Kwesi Nduom, a founder member of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), has called on the government to use its purchasing power to help create a market for Ghanaian farmers.

He said it was not good enough to set a day aside to celebrate farmers and fishermen when they can be celebrated throughout the year.

In his view, this can be achieved when Ghanaians insist on buying locally produced crops and fresh fish, not frozen, imported fish.

That, he said, would make farmers and fishermen glad.

Dr Nduom, in a video posted on his Facebook page to mark Farmers Day on Friday, said unlike other political leaders, who always come out to congratulate farmers and fishermen on Farmers Day, he had made a personal commitment that his hotels would not serve anything that was imported when and “if we have a locally made substitute.”

He said Ghana would create a wonderful market for farmers and fishermen if the country elected a president who would insist that “if you go to a state function, nothing will touch your lips if it is not produced in Ghana by way of food and drink or no state institution can go and purchase any food item that is not produced in Ghana”.

He added that if the School Feeding Programme would insist on local produce, “it would create jobs”.

Support PPP

Dr Nduom advised Ghanaians to support the PPP’s idea of using the state’s considerable purchasing power to help create a market for Ghanaian farmers. This, according to him, will make a wonderful farmers’ and fishermen’s year, not just a day.
