Ghana co-chairs ECOWAS Network of Women Ministers
Ghana has been elected as the new Co-chair of the ECOWAS Network of African Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment for 2015-2016.
This was at the African Ministerial Conference on Environment (AMCEN) held in Cairo, Egypt from the March 2 to 6, 2015.
The Deputy Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation (MESTI), Dr Bernice Heloo, was therefore elected to co-chair the group at the African Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment meeting in Cairo, Egypt.
The conference, among others, was to harness Africa’s environmental resources by mapping out policies and strategies to support Africa’s transformation and that of the sub-region in particular.
Dr Heloo noted that Ghana was in a very unique position to mobilise resources to deal with environmental issues, especially climate change and adaptation mechanisms, to ensure the reduction in emissions to the acceptable level.
In a statement, Dr Heloo pledged that Ghana would once again bring her leadership prowess to bear on the Network for Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment (NWMLE).
She also indicated that she would use her new office to mobilise women from the local, national and international levels to support economic transformation and growth.
She pointed out that her election had put Ghana in a position to spearhead environmental issues and programmes, both at local and sub-regional levels, to achieve the outcomes of the conference in finding practical solutions to the environmental and sustainable development problems confronting the sub-region.
She, therefore, called on all representatives from member countries to support and work hard in order to achieve the main objectives of the conference during her tenure as the new co-chair of the Network of Women Ministers and Leaders for the Environment (NWMLE).
Dr Bernice Heloo gave the assurance that she would use the opportunity to positively impact the lives of women in the country and the sub-region in general.
She said she would soon make her plans and projects known to make them beneficial to others.
