A communiqué issued at the end of the three-day state visit of the Guinean president, Prof. Alpha Conde, to Ghana said the two leaders admitted the low level of economic interaction between their nations and resolved to chart a new path of progress.

It mentioned mining and energy as two of the new areas the two nations would want to collaborate extensively and take advantage of the opportunities they offer.

They also took a firm position on “strengthening cooperation in human resource capacity development and the design of appropriate regulatory frameworks to guide operations in each sector.”

“They (Presidents) were gratified to observe that after 25 years of inactivity, the Ghana-Guinea Permanent Joint Commission for Cooperation which had served as the main framework for economic cooperation between the two countries, was finally reconvened in May 2013,” the communique said.

While admitting the existing cordial bilateral relations between the two countries, the two Presidents resolved to further deepen ties in a win-win situation.

The communiqué stated that the bilateral relations were founded on “shared values of mutual respect, commitment to democracy, good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.”

It further said: “At bilateral talks, the two Heads of State acknowledged the challenges confronting the effective realisation of the aspirations of the African Union and agreed to harness their collective efforts and resources towards accelerating the process of continental integration.”

“They renewed their commitment to the ideals and tenets of regional integration as the pillar of Africa’s eventual unity for the sustainable development and preservation of the peace and security of the continent.”

At the end of their discussions, the communiqué said both Presidents were satisfied with the prevailing state of bilateral relations, which hinged on  “shared values of mutual respect, commitment to democracy, good governance, the rule of law and respect for human rights.”

President Conde was in the country at the invitation of President Mahama.

During his three-day visit, he visited the Akosombo Dam, a fruit juice processing factory at Nsawam, addressed a seminar on responsible mining initiative and laid wreaths on the tombs of  former late Presidents, Kwame Nkrumah and John Evans Atta Mills.

President Conde expressed satisfaction with the visit, especially the reception given him by his host and Ghanaians in general.
