Don’t abuse trust of people - Speaker tells MP for Ablekuma North

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has sworn the National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament, Ewurabena Aubynn, into office.

She was sworn in after the Speaker had read a communication dated July 14, 2025, from the Chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Jean Mensa, informing the Clerk to Parliament about the election of the new MP.

Her swearing-in has now increased the number of female legislators in the House to 41, a development the Speaker described as a “blessing”.

Her presence has now enabled the NDC Caucus to hold two-thirds of the membership in the House, a figure that allows the Majority to proceed freely and without obstruction in every decision-making process.

Ms Aubynn obtained 34,090 votes to defeat her sole contender, Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who polled 33,881 votes.

Even before she was sworn in, the Minority Caucus expressed their unwillingness to participate in the process and walked out.

The Minority Chief Whip, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, told the House that “we cannot be part of the swearing-in process, but we would engage in other businesses in the House”.

People trust

Soon after she was sworn in, Mr Bagbin congratulated her on being the youngest MP in the Ninth Parliament.

He, however, urged her to be punctual in the House, remain calm, listen more, learn from colleagues, and read everything—not only the Constitution and the standing orders.

“Read everything because you are now the hope of the people in the constituency, and they are looking up to you to do something to improve their lives.

“It is a trust, and I pray you do not abuse it; four years is just a day, and you will go back to them, and they will assess you this time based on your performance.

“So please do not be misled by anyone; you fought the battle, and others only supported you, but it was your picture and name on the ballot box.

So, do not allow anyone to change who you are,” he said.

Mr Bagbin told the new MP that her constituents voted for her even though on a party ticket and, therefore, advised her to dedicate herself to the people and be the woman that “you are”.

Use majority wisely

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, expressed his excitement that the people of Ablekuma North Constituency now had an MP after a long struggle.

He said the aspirations of the people and their preferred choice to have an MP represent them in Parliament had been fulfilled.

Mr Ayariga stated that the NDC, for the first time in a long while, held two-thirds of the membership in the House.

“Mr Speaker, with this number, we can do many good things for this country and carry out significant constitutional reforms to improve this country.

“We will use it wisely, properly and we will make sure that these numbers inure to the benefit of Ghanaians,” he said.
