NDC to elect Ayawaso East by-election candidate February 7

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) will hold its parliamentary primary on February 7, 2026, to elect the party’s candidate for the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election slated for March 3, 2026.

The party announced this in a statement signed and issued by its General Secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, to outline the processes for nominations, filing, vetting and the conduct of the election in the constituency.

It urged all aspirants and stakeholders to abide by the guidelines and timelines put out by the party for the election and conduct their activities with decency, unity, and in the true spirit of fairness and internal democracy.

Context

This follows the announcement by the Electoral Commission (EC) to hold the Ayawaso East Constituency parliamentary by-election in the Greater Accra on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The decision followed the unfortunate death of the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso East Constituency, Mahama Naser Toure, which rendered the seat vacant.

A statement issued by the EC said it was in accordance with Article 112 (5) of the Constitution, as amended.

Nomination

The NDC in its statement said nomination forms would be available at the Greater Accra Regional Office of the party from Saturday, January 24, 2026, between 7.00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m while the submission of the forms would be on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, within the same hours.

This, it said, would be followed by vetting, balloting and appeals on Wednesday, January 28, 2026.

It said a filing fee of GH¢40,000 has been set for aspirants, while the cost of the nomination form is GH¢5,000, to be paid in cash upon collection.

The party has, however, granted a 50 per cent concession on the filing fee for female aspirants and persons living with disabilities.

“All payments must be made directly into the party’s designated UMB account at the Adabraka branch.

No cheques or bankers’ drafts will be accepted,” the statement read.

The party indicated that a certified copy of the delegates’ list would be made available to aspirants upon verification of the payment of the approved filing fee into the party’s official account.

Background

The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat was held by the late Naser Toure of the NDC until his sudden demise in the early part of January this year.
