We won Akwatia by-election to honour Dr Omane Boamah — NDC Deputy Director of Elections

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Deputy Director of Elections and Information Technology (IT), Sofo Tanko Rashid Computer, has said the party’s victory in last Tuesday's Akwatia by-election was in honour of his boss, the late Dr Edward Omane Boamah.

He said Dr Omane Boamah, the then NDC Director of Elections and IT, gave them the tutorials, the plan and the strategy to go about the by-election before he died, and “we did exactly what he taught us to win the seat”.

"This was his (Dr Omane Boamah's) passion. This was his plan. He could not see it through himself. So, we had to do that to honour him," he said.

The NDC Deputy Director of Elections and IT said the party's victory at the Akwatia parliamentary by-election was an indication that the good people of the area were satisfied with what the NDC government had accomplished in just eight months in office.

That, he said, enabled the party to flip a constituency which the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) believed they had secured — not only did the NDC win, but they also increased the vote margin.

"It shows that the good people of Akwatia have confidence in the government of the NDC.

“So we are satisfied and happy with them. We thank them for reposing their confidence in the government of the NDC led by President John Dramani Mahama, " he stated

Downplay

That, Mr Rashid Computer said, also showed that the NDC government was doing the right things and resetting the country.

He dismissed the attempts by the opposition NPP to downplay the victory of the NDC in the election by accusing the party of intimidation and assault.

“That has been their modus operandi. They did the same thing with Ablekuma North and repeated it at Akwatia but we will remain focused and resolute on our mandate," he said.

He accused the NPP of deliberately going into the election with the intention to provoke the NDC through actions such as the defacing of the party's posters to mar the beauty of the election because they knew they were going to lose.

“We did not respond and we made sure that we played by the rules and regulations for the conduct of the election," he said.

The Akwatia parliamentary by-election was won by Bernard Bediako Baidoo of the NDC with 18,199 votes against NPP Solomon Asumadu who secured 15,235 votes
