Since the return to constitutional rule  in 1992, Ghana has made significant strides  towards democratic governance as the country conducts its seventh presidential and parliamentary elections of the Fourth Republic this year.

The National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) in 2001 set aside April 28 to May 4 of every year to commemorate the country’s return to constitutional government.

In line with this, the commission organises its flagship programme, Constitution Week, to reflect on how far the country has come in her democratic journey, assess the challenges  and live up to the rights and responsibilities as citizens of Ghana.

The NCCE is celebrating the 2016 Constitution Week on the theme: ’’My Ghana; The power of one’’ to  emphasise  personal responsibility and ownership for Ghana and the power of  individual action to effect a change to make Ghana a better place.

Democratic journey

In a statement, the Director of Communications and Corporate Affairs of NCCE,  Mrs Joyce Afutu, urged Ghanaians to strengthen their resolve to protect the national stability, peace, unity and cohesion.

She said even though Ghana had been touted as an oasis of peace and beacon of African democracy, there had been some reported cases of intolerance within sections of the Ghanaian society.

‘’Latent  conflicts exist among pockets of communities and sometimes along religious and ethic lines,’’she stated.

According to Mrs Afutu, the recent interception of ammunition by the security agencies, coupled with some disturbances on the political landscape, called for deeper reflection.
